[SB] Spanish imperial rule
By Joy P.
[SB] Describe the Spanish Imperial rule over its new founded territory of Latin America
Politics/State-Building
- Spanish conquests of Americas was comprised of individual efforts from freelance adventurers, not from Spanish royalty/government
- By 1750, Spanish royalty took over rule in Americas from conquistadors
- Established two centers of authority
- Mexico (New Spain)
- Built capital Mexico City on top of Tenochtitlan
- Peru (New Castile)
- Moved capital from Cuzco (geography too difficult, high altitude unpleasant) to Lima
- Each governed by a viceroy who serves king of Spain
- Kings limited viceroys' power using review courts called audiencias, comprised of university-educated lawyers
- Viceroys still had considerable power and policy-making because of difficulty communicating with Spain
- Mexico (New Spain)
- Spanish rule led to establishment of cities throughout viceroyalties
- Increasing number of migrants expanded Spanish territory and built network of bureaucratic governance based in cities
- Established two centers of authority
Analysis: Though the conquistadors conquered the Americas and placed it under their control, the Spanish imperial government stepped in to lay claim because they wanted the power/resources/land. The kings placed viceroys in charge of the Spanish land in the Americas so that the kings, via the viceroys, could govern. The kings then used review courts called audiencias to prevent the viceroys from gaining too much power or independency. The review courts would investigate the viceroys to see if they were properly carrying out their given duties, then would report back to the kings. However, the viceroys still had considerable power because it took so long to send information, including the audiencia reports, between the Americas and Spain, thus exploiting a flaw in the Spanish royal government's system.
This is a crossword I made to summarize this objective. The answers are bolded words in the notes above. The answers are:
Across: 1. communicating, 2. viceroy
Down: 1. royalty, 2. Mexico, 3. Peru, 4. audiencia

This is a YouTube video I found and chopped that goes over Spanish rule of the Americas, particularly Spanish imperial rule.
